Program Eligibility FAQs

To be eligible for Caritas of Austin’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Reside in Travis, Williamson, or Bastrop County
  • Currently experiencing homelessness
  • Have a household income less than 30% of the Area Median Income (AMI)
  • Be a member of a Veteran family (single individual or multi-person household)
  • Have a discharge status other than dishonorable

If you fit the criteria above, please complete a Coordinated Assessment as a first step to accessing our Veterans services.

The majority of refugee clients come directly through federal government referrals. Asylees, Cuban parolees, SIVs, and secondary migrants seeking services at Caritas of Austin can walk in at our downtown location and sign in for services. We will provide an extensive community resource packet. Once signed in, you will be contacted via telephone within three business days for initial screening and assessment to determine eligibility for services. If eligible, an in-person appointment will be scheduled to complete initial paperwork.

Lunch is served daily in our Community Kitchen from 11:00am - 12:30pm, thanks to the support of community volunteers. Vegetarian and vegan options are available upon request.

Our Pantry is only available for clients already enrolled in one of our housing or refugee resettlement programs. Clients are able to access the Caritas Pantry up to 10 times while in services.

Our Life Skills and Money Management classes are free to clients and open to the public for a small fee. Our workforce development, cultural orientation, and gender dialogues courses are only available to existing clients.

Caritas of Austin’s employment services are only available to current Caritas of Austin clients.

Caritas of Austin does not provide rental assistance, utility assistance, or bus passes independent of case management services. Please contact 2-1-1 to learn about community organizations that can provide assistance.

Unlike our downtown location, Caritas North services are by appointment only.

Please refer to our Get Started page to learn more about Coordinated Assessment and how to access housing services.

Caritas of Austin does not accept clothing donations. We encourage donating to St. Vincent de Paul Store, who generously donate vouchers to Caritas of Austin clients.
