CARITAS OF AUSTIN LAUNCHES MONTHLY VOLUNTEER OPEN HOUSE

Community Members Invited to Attend and to Learn More About Caritas Programs

(Austin, TX) – Caritas of Austin is offering a Volunteer Open House on the first Tuesday of each month for the first time in the social service agency’s 42-year history. Volunteers are invited to learn more about Caritas’ programs and services from the agency’s directors; to meet other people interested in volunteering; to find out about additional volunteer opportunities; and to begin the volunteer process by scheduling an interview.

Open Houses will be offered at 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at Caritas on 611 Neches Street. The next Open House will be offered on June 6 and the following Open House will be moved to July 11 due to the July Fourth holiday.

“We are delighted at this opportunity to educate volunteers on the many programs and services we provide to families in need in our community,” said Beth Atherton, executive director of Caritas. “Volunteers provide critical support to our agency. They help newly arrived documented refugee families settle into their new homes in Central Texas; they assist clients with finding employment; they act as translators for non-English speaking clients; they help prepare and serve hot meals in our soup kitchen; and they help re-stock our food pantry, among other roles. Without volunteers, we would not be able to reach the families who need our help the most.”

To R.S.V.P. for Caritas’ Volunteer Open House, call Molly Sipe, volunteer coordinator, at 512-646-1251 or e-mail msipe@caritasofaustin.org.

Since 1964, Caritas has assisted with basic needs such as food, rent and utilities and helped clients learn the skills they need to gain self-reliance. This year, Caritas will serve over 20,000 adults and children as Travis County’s largest source of non-governmental assistance. “Caritas” is from the Latin word for love, and in this spirit, anyone with a legitimate need is eligible to receive help.
