Caritas of Austin Hosts Faith Food Drive to Stock Pantry Shelves for Needy Families

WHAT:  Local churches and faith-based organizations participating in Caritas of Austin’s Faith Food Drive will drop-off bags of groceries and hygiene items for the Food Pantry. Donated goods from the Faith Food Drive will stock the Pantry’s shelves and help provide two-day supplies of groceries for Central Texans in need. This year, the Pantry will distribute groceries to over 3,600 households. Caritas’ soup kitchen, which relies heavily on donated food to prepare meals, will serve over 100,000 meals.

Last year’s Faith Food Drive collected over 10,000 pounds of food.

WHO:  21 faith-based organizations representing religions from around the world will participate in the Faith Food Drive.

WHEN:  Sunday, May 7, 2006, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

WHERE:  St. John’s United Methodist Church, 2140 Allandale (near 2222 and Burnet)

Since 1964, Caritas has assisted with basic needs such as food, rent and utilities and helped clients learn the skills they need to gain self-reliance. This year, Caritas will serve over 20,000 adults and children as Travis County’s largest source of non-governmental assistance. “Caritas” is from the Latin word for love, and in this spirit, anyone with a legitimate need is eligible to receive help.
