CARITAS OF AUSTIN HONORS MICHAEL AND SUSAN DELL AT PENICK AWARD DINNER

Social Services Agency Hosts Largest Annual Fundraiser on November 2

(Austin, TX) – Caritas of Austin will honor Central Texas philanthropists Michael and Susan Dell at the organization’s 14th Annual Harvey Penick Award Dinner on November 2, 2005. The Dells will be recognized with the Harvey Penick Award for Excellence in the Game of Life for their outstanding contributions to the community. This event – Caritas’ single largest fundraiser – will significantly support the agency’s ability to help Central Texans in need.

“We are delighted to honor Michael and Susan Dell for their phenomenal roles as community leaders,” said Julia Spann, executive director of Caritas. “Their commitment to helping others is similar to our mission here at Caritas – helping those who need it most.”

The Dells were recognized in 2004 as seventh in BusinessWeek magazine’s list of 50 most generous philanthropists. The Dells exemplify the spirit of the Harvey Penick Award, given each year to prominent leaders whose lives emulate that of the first recipient, Harvey Penick. As legendary golf coach of Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite and many others, Harvey Penick was a teacher and mentor who helped his students to be their best. He was an extraordinary example of dedication, discipline and humility.

“We couldn’t think of two people more deserving of this year’s Harvey Penick Award than Michael and Susan Dell,” said Brian DeRoeck, president of Caritas’ Board of Directors. “They capture the remarkable spirit of generosity and leadership that embodies the award.”

Past honorees of the Penick Award include Harvey Penick, Cliff Gustafson, Jake Pickle, Barbara Jordan, Lady Bird Johnson, George Christian, Bob Bullock, Edith and Darrell Royal, Lowell H. Lebermann, Jr., Ben Crenshaw, Angela and Mort Topfer, Jody Conradt and Larry Gatlin.

About Caritas of Austin:
For 41 years, Caritas has operated a community kitchen and food pantry and assisted with emergency rent and utilities. Each year more than 15,000 adults and children in Travis County receive assistance with the most basic of needs such as shelter, utilities and food.

Caritas is Travis County’s largest non-governmental source of assistance and an integral part of our community’s human services network. “Caritas” is from the Latin word for love, and in this spirit, anyone with a legitimate need is eligible to receive help.
