Caritas of Austin's food services are part of our comprehensive service model to ensure people have their basic needs met on their path toward self-sufficiency. Hunger is an important issue in our community. In Travis County, nearly 20% of households are food insecure, meaning they lack consistent, reliable access to adequate, nutritious food.
Beginning August 15, 2017 and continuing for 30 days, a downtown safety initiative will include changes to lunch served Monday - Friday. During this time, lunch will be served at the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (across the street from Caritas of Austin) to individuals engaged in services at either of the agencies. Caritas of Austin provides take-home groceries to our clients. This year we will provide enough groceries for 43,000 meals. When you are struggling to make ends meet and must choose between putting food on the table and paying the electric bill, weekly groceries from the Caritas Pantry bring great relief to families toward stability.
