2013 Harvey Penick Award Honorees
Caritas is excited to announce Sarah and Ernest Butler as the 2013 Harvey Penick Award honorees. Calling Austin home since 1969, the Butlers have a history of giving to causes they believe enhance quality of life in the community. Dr. Butler, a retired otolaryngologist, is a founding member of the Austin Ear, Nose & Throat Clinic and Acoustic Systems. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, and works to ensure the next generation of success by providing scholarships for Biology and Chemistry students. Dr. Butler serves on the board of the Austin Symphony Orchestra and the Advisory Council of the Butler School of Music, and is past treasurer and trustee of the Texas Medical Association Foundation. Mrs. Butler is chairwoman of the Ballet Austin Board of Directors, a member of the Blanton Museum Council, and a member of the University of Texas at Austin Development Board as well as a past board member of Austin Lyric Opera.
Along with a passion for the arts, recognizing the impact teachers can make, and the importance of science education in growing future healthcare professionals, Dr. Ernest and Sarah Butler established an endowment in 1998 to help Texas Medical Association honor the state's best science teachers. The Ernest and Sarah Butler Endowment for Excellence in Teaching provides annual cash awards for winning teachers of the TMA Award for Excellence in Science Teaching at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Dr. Butler’s contributions to TMA and the medical community were recognized with his awarding of TMA’s 2013 Distinguished Service Award he received in May of 2013. Their passion of arts and education is also evident by their generous contributions to the University of Texas at Austin School of Music, which in 2008 was renamed in the Butlers honor. The Butlers are members of the University’s Chancellor’s Council, President’s Associates and the Texas Exes.
